Cuernavaca’s cathedrals were a prominent inspiration for this architecture piece. The majority of Hispanics are Catholics or follow certain of the religions costumes because throughout time those religious costumes eventually became general traditions. Thus, I thought using aspects of cathedrals would add on to the rediscovery of Hispanics roots. Most cathedrals have arched doorways, pointed or arched windows and intricate details.

planning
knowing that I wanted to incorporate aspects from cathedrals in mexico I started a sketch what highlighted the most prominent and traditional components of cathedrals. To keep the building looking like a museum I decided to make the building short in height and long in length and simplistic without the large amount of intricate details that cathedrals hold. The most traditional and mostly seen aspects within cathedrals are squared pillars next to entrances, doorways are arched and they're short/long arch on the top of the building and above the principle doorway. Thus, I decided to draw a row of arched entrances along the side of the building and having the large arch over the main entry way. I noticed that a lot of the windows in cathedrals are rounded or pointed or match the structure of the doorway. Since I had already planned to input arched entrances along the side of the building I decided against matching the structure of the window with the structure of the main entrance and instead decided to use long narrow and pointed windows. process
To begin I taped my sheet onto the cardboard and gave the sheet a one inch border. Next I drew my horizon line beyond the end of the sheet and about an inch lower than the center of the paper. I set out a triangle square, an 18 inch ruler and a 12 inch ruler. Since I knew I wanted one side of the building to be emphasized I drew the most prominent edge of the building more towards the left side and then drew out a rectangular prism which would be the foundation of the building. In order to make the building symmetrical I divided the front side of the building equally by creating a X using each corner and splitting the x in half, I continued the process until I had the right amount of equal space. In the midst of creating the lines and x’s I did not erase the unnecessary lines that had already served their purpose which lead to confusion on figuring out what space was for what and what line was for what.
Creating the arches, I created a rectangle along the wall and drew a line across it to separate the straight sides from the actual arch. I then found the center of the area for the arch and drew diagonal lines starting from the bottom center to the top corners, I split the lines into thirds and essentially connected the dots. However, while splitting the lines into thirds, a lot of the time the semi-circles would come out lopsided or would look complexity different from each other because I was only eyeballing where the third section was. I essentially used the same method for the arches to make the windows. However instead of of creating a semi-circle I did somewhat rounded triangles without the base of a triangle. |
